Former editor, literary agent, and founder of Spencerhill Associates, Karen L. Solem, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2025, following a lengthy illness. Solem helped establish romance as the powerhouse genre it is today. She was also a trailblazer who paved the way for female editors. She supported the early careers of bestselling authors like Nora Roberts, publishing her first 100 books. She also played a key role in launching the careers of New York Times bestsellers Sandra Brown, Barbara Delinsky, and Janet Evanovich.

Early in her career, Solem joined Simon and Schuster’s Silhouette imprint. Their starting goal was to publish four books every other month. By the time Solem left, Silhouette had been purchased by Harlequin Books and was publishing 26 to 28 books monthly. It was with Silhouette that Nora Roberts published her first book.

Roberts remembers meeting Solem for the first time at the Silhouette offices in New York where she was then editor-in-chief.

“That first impression is ingrained in my memory,” Roberts said. “I saw a gorgeous, fascinating, in-charge executive who moved like a bullet and still took the time to speak to a very, very green newbie. I was so intimidated.”

That initial impression was not uncommon for those meeting Solem. But after 100 books, Roberts got to know the woman beyond the title. She remembers Solem for her “kindness, smarts, humor, compassion, love of books, and unwavering support of those who write them.”

But that’s not all she’ll remember. “I've got a lot of memories of Karen, a lot of laughs and conversations stored,” Roberts said. “What I remember most? She was all class.”

Solem moved to the agenting side of the business with a stint at Writer’s House. While she was there she signed Colleen Coble. Coble is a Publishers Weekly and USA Today bestselling author — with over 5 million books sold — and current president of American Christian Fiction Writers.

Coble shared a particularly close relationship with Solem. “I was privileged to call Karen Solem my agent and friend for 26 years,” she said. “She was a tiny powerhouse in the industry and blazed a trail that was unmatched.”

Solem founded her own agency, Spencerhill Associates, in 2001. There she shepherded the careers of many more bestselling and award-winning authors, including Mary Burton, a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, and Denise Hunter, an international bestseller with over 40 novels and three Hallmark movie adaptations.

Hunter relays that Karen was not only her agent, but dear friend — a tremendous book lover and tenacious advocate for her authors. “Her legacy in publishing will live on in well-loved novels, and in the grateful hearts of authors and readers worldwide,” she said.

Those who knew Solem will remember her spunk and sharp New York directness. Yet, her dedication and deep care for her authors was undeniable, as was her talent for spotting and nurturing emerging voices.

The Spencerhill team continues her legacy of excellence under the leadership of Solem’s friend of 40 years and successor, Nalini Akolekar. Akolekar first worked alongside Solem as her assistant at Silhouette in the early 80’s.

“Karen Solem was a talented, shrewd and dynamic force in the publishing world, but she was also a tremendously kind and loving person who believed in giving back to her community,” said Akolekar. “I am so grateful for the many years that she was my inspiration, mentor, and dearest friend. I will miss her every day.”

Spencerhill Associates continues Solem’s legacy. Her team represents numerous New York Times and USA Today bestsellers, RITA Award winners, and a Bram Stoker Award winner. While honoring Solem’s vision, the agency continues to evolve and expand into different genres, beyond the firm foundation she established in romance and women’s fiction.
